Silver Mercury Amalgam Filling Removal

Many dentists all over the world remove metal amalgam fillings with no regard for the possible mercury exposure that can result from grinding them out. Many people are becoming more aware of the potential hazards/concerns surrounding amalgam fillings. Therefore, Dr. Butler uses the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) for the safe removal of mercury fillings.

Suction 1
A highly effective HVE adjunct is the “Clean-Up” suction tip, which has an enclosure at the end that surrounds the tooth you’re working on. It dramatically reduces the spatter of particles directing them efficiently into the suction tube.

Suction 2
The Air IQ system, aka "Snuffleupagus". This is an air filtration unit designed to remove mercury from the air. A large flexible tube sits near the work area capturing the air and filtering it. This helps remove mercury in the air away from the patient while improving the overall air quality in the room.

Use of a “Rubber Dam”
A rubber dam will help contain the majority of the debris during amalgam removal. It works as a barrier between the work area and other areas (e.g. throat, lungs). Using a saliva ejector behind the dam helps evacuate air and saliva (which may contain mercury vapor) that may possibly get past the dam.

Supplemental Oxygen
We provide the patient with oxygen so they do not have to breathe the air directly over the mouth during amalgam removal. A positive pressure respiration device is used to administer the oxygen.

Suggested Mercury Supplement Protocol
It is important to prepare the body to capture any Mercury in the bloodstream before it enters any cellular tissue. Glutathione is an effective anti-oxidant with sulfhydryl groups that latch onto any free Mercury in the blood stream. Alpha Lipoic Acid is a potent anti-oxidant that also removes toxins from the body much the same way Glutathione does. Vitamin C, a potent anti-oxidant and free radical scavenger, assists in the excretion of the Mercury via your urine and stool.
(Please consult with your physician about taking any supplements should there be a question or interaction with any medication you are taking or your current medical condition(s).)

System Detoxification
After the safe removal of the amalgam filling, we recommend patients seek a system detox program. These programs help support healthy elimination of heavy metal toxins while providing proper vitamins minerals to increase circulation and improve overall dental/whole body health. Please see your primary care physician or Naturopath to assist you with this. If you do not currently have one, we can recommend one for you.

Dr. Butler is SMART certified from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology to remove amalgam the safest way possible!
